Revaluation of All Values
Updated 2026-08-01
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Proposed by Friedrich Nietzsche, the revaluation of all values demands that morality, religion and philosophy be questioned at their foundation rather than reformed piecemeal. Its target is the slave morality he identified in Christian-Platonic ethics, which he argued had inverted strength into guilt and humility. The measure for revaluation is life itself and the will to power: a value is judged by whether it enhances or diminishes life. The qualifier is that this is a re-valuation with a new standard, not a demolition of all value.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Value audit: ask who benefits from a norm you treat as obvious and unchosen. - Measure check: judge each value by whether it enlarges or shrinks your capacity to act. - Value creation: draft a replacement value and test it in a real decision.
Anchor fast decisions
Values that present themselves as timeless are usually the residue of a particular historical victory, so their authority is inherited rather than earned. By asking what a value does to life, the thinker converts a moral absolute into a claim that can be assessed and replaced. That move makes value systems revisable rather than given.
