Affirming the Antecedent
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The most basic form of deductive reasoning. If P, then Q; P occurs; therefore Q occurs. Formula: ((P → Q) ∧ P) ⊢ Q.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Causal chain check. This is the cornerstone of logic. When analyzing problems, clarify your major premise (rule) and minor premise (fact). Many erroneous decisions are due to the major premise itself being wrong (P does not imply Q), or mistaking correlation for causation.
Anchor fast decisions
This is the rule of detachment (Modus Ponens), a valid deduction: if P→Q is true and P is true, then Q is necessarily true. The truth-preserving nature comes from the definition of implication; as long as both premises hold, the conclusion is beyond doubt.
