Dialogical Self
Updated 2026-08-15
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
The dialogical self describes identity as a set of internal positions or voices that converse, argue, and negotiate within one person. Inner conflict is the sign of uncoordinated voices rather than of pathology. The qualification is that giving each voice a hearing is a method of deliberation, not a licence to let whichever voice is loudest decide.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Use Voice Identification: name the distinct positions currently arguing inside you. - Use Chairing the Debate: let each voice state its case before you decide anything.
Anchor fast decisions
A decision that suppresses one of its own motives leaves that motive to resurface later as resistance or regret. Allowing each position to state its concern brings the underlying interests into the open, where they can be weighed rather than acted out.
