Fault Tree Analysis, FTA
Updated 2026-08-10
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Tracing downward from a top event, an undesired occurrence, through layers of causes connected by logic gates, AND and OR, to form a tree diagram. As a scaffold it is the systematic tracing of a fault's causes, turning the vague question of why it went wrong into a structured causal chain. It unites the earlier names of fault tree analysis and accident sequence analysis.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Top event: define the undesired event that the whole tree will hang from. - Gate logic: link each layer of causes with AND or with OR gates. - Cut set hunt: find the smallest combination of failures and defend against it first.
Anchor fast decisions
From the top undesired event, the analysis works downward, linking each layer of causes with AND and OR gates into a tree. The mechanism is top-down deduction: the vague question of why the accident happened becomes a computable causal chain that locates the necessary and the sufficient conditions and the critical path among them.
