CORE DEFINITION

The IMPROVE strategy is a seven-step framework for learning that embeds metacognitive training in subject instruction. The steps are introducing the new concept, posing metacognitive questions, practicing, reviewing and correcting, obtaining mastery, verifying, and enriching. Metacognitive questioning distinguishes the model from ordinary practice sequences: learners are asked to explain their reasoning and assess their own understanding while working, which keeps monitoring active during practice rather than only after assessment. The sequence assumes that mastery is a gate rather than a milestone, so verification follows demonstrated mastery and enrichment extends a concept only once it is secure.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Use metacognitive prompts: insert questions about reasoning and confidence into each practice round. - Use mastery gate: require demonstrated mastery before moving to verification and enrichment. - Use error correction: review mistakes as a distinct step rather than folding it into more practice.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Practice without monitoring reinforces whatever the learner is already doing, including errors, so repetition alone does not produce mastery. Metacognitive questioning during practice surfaces the learner's reasoning, which makes incorrect rules visible while they can still be corrected. Separating review from practice gives correction its own time rather than assuming more repetition will fix it. Because enrichment comes after verification, the learner extends a concept only once it is reliable, which prevents building advanced work on a shaky foundation.
