Occidentalism is a discipline that discusses the Western world (or Occident). In this context, the West becomes the object, while the East is the subject. The West in the context of Occidentalism does not refer to the geographical West, but to its culture or customs, particularly covering fields such as thought, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, history, religion, colonialism, war, segregation, and geography. It is not as prevalent in popular and academic circles as Orientalism. The term emerged as a symmetrical mirror concept to the Orientalism defined by literary critic Edward Said. Orientalism refers to its critique of the long-standing stereotypes that the Western world has held about Eastern cultures.
