Competency Trap
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A competency trap is an organizational-learning risk in which past success with one approach encourages repeated selection and reinforcement of familiar capabilities, narrows the options considered, and reduces exploration of other products, markets, or methods. Competence is not itself wrong; the trap is carrying past success into a new context without comparison.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Checks whether a strategy keeps receiving resources because “we are good at it,” which alternatives are being displaced, and how learning from experience differs from selection bias.
Anchor fast decisions
Experience and anticipated returns influence organizational choices, while organizations accumulate more experience in the activities they choose. This feedback can reduce experimentation with alternatives. Repetition, learning, and selection effects must be distinguished; greater experience guarantees neither improvement nor rigidity.
