Cultural Appropriation
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The adoption of elements (such as hairstyles, clothing, totems) from a minority culture by a dominant culture group without understanding, respect, or acknowledgment of the source, often for entertainment or profit.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
The boundary of cultural exchange. Although cultural fusion is a trend, attention must be paid to power imbalances. When borrowing, ask yourself: Am I paying homage or exploiting? Am I diluting the sacredness of the other through commodification? This concerns the bottom line of respect.
Anchor fast decisions
The dominant group takes cultural symbols from a minority group without informed consent and decontextualizes them, often accompanied by exploitation and disrespect. It involves power imbalance and respect.
