Acculturation
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Psychological and cultural changes that occur when different cultural groups come into continuous contact. Individuals have four strategies: integration (retain original culture + accept new culture), assimilation (abandon original culture + accept new culture), separation (retain original culture + reject new culture), and marginalization (reject both).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
A strategy matrix for integrating into new environments. Whether immigrating or changing jobs to a new company, the best strategy is usually "integration" (bicultural competence). Neither forget your roots nor fail to adapt to local customs, so you have two adaptive systems, which is most robust.
Anchor fast decisions
When different cultures have prolonged direct contact, one or both sides undergo changes and adoption of cultural traits, values, and behaviors. It is a bidirectional and selective process; distinct from "assimilation" (where one side is completely replaced).
