Exergy
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Available energy. Energy is conserved, but exergy is not. When we consume energy resources, the total amount of energy remains the same, but its ability to do work (exergy) decreases, turning into unusable waste heat (entropy).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
A measure of resource quality. When evaluating resources, do not only look at the total quantity (how many joules), but also at the grade (how much exergy). The same amount of heat, high-temperature steam at 1000 degrees is more valuable than warm water at 30 degrees. The same applies to talent: do not look at working hours, but at the difficulty of problems they can solve.
Anchor fast decisions
In thermodynamics, exergy refers to the maximum useful work a system can produce relative to its environment, measuring the "quality" or availability of energy, as opposed to energy which only counts total quantity.
