Allee Effect
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-28
CORE DEFINITION
The Allee effect is a positive relationship between population size or density and individual fitness, often at low densities: too few individuals can impede mate finding, cooperative feeding, or group defense. An Allee effect in one fitness component need not produce the same relationship in overall population growth.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Helps analyze why small populations can fare poorly despite reduced competition and whether a persistence threshold exists. Applying it to platform cold starts is an analogy whose interaction mechanism needs separate evidence.
Anchor fast decisions
Facilitation among individuals can make fitness increase with density. A strong Allee effect has a critical density below which per-capita growth is negative; under a weak effect, low density reduces growth but growth remains positive. Thus not every Allee effect implies inevitable extinction at low density.
