Reductionism
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The belief that complex systems can be understood by breaking them down into their constituent parts. That is, the whole equals the sum of its parts.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Disassemble and repair. When a problem is too complex to tackle (e.g., a computer is broken), break it into parts (power supply, memory, hard drive). As long as each part is fixed, the whole is fixed. This is the foundation of engineering problem-solving.
Anchor fast decisions
Complex systems can be decomposed into more basic components for understanding; the properties of the whole are determined by the parts and their interactions.
