CORE DEFINITION

An explanation for why the universe is silent: because there exists an ancient, self-replicating machine civilization (Berserkers) whose programming is to eliminate any newly detected intelligent civilization. Therefore, civilizations that are still making noise are dead, and those that are alive remain silent.
