Hobbesian Trap
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The Hobbesian trap describes a situation in which mutual fear of imminent attack encourages preemptive strategies. Even when cooperation or mutual nonattack would be better, fear can drive escalation. It is related to the security dilemma, not an established “advanced version,” and does not require both parties to be entirely benign in every respect.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Explains the mechanism of conflict escalation. It emphasizes the importance of 'transparency' and 'communication' in avoiding unnecessary defensive attacks, helping us establish mutual trust mechanisms in interpersonal or organizational relationships.
Anchor fast decisions
Fear that the other side may act first increases the appeal of acting preemptively. Preparations can then be read as offensive intent, reinforcing fear. Credible commitments, institutions, or communication may change incentives; verbal assurances alone may not suffice.
