CORE DEFINITION
Maid and butler dialogue, also called As You Know, Bob, is a craft term for exposition delivered through conversation between two characters who already share the information being exchanged. The name comes from the stage convention of servants discussing their employers' affairs within earshot of the audience. It fails because the dialogue has no motive: characters speak for the reader's benefit rather than their own. The standard remedy is to convert exposition into conflict, so that information escapes under pressure through a slip in an argument, a threat, or a negotiation.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Audit motive: check whether each speaker has a reason to say this to this person. - Convert to conflict: let facts leak through argument, pressure, or negotiation. - Replace with evidence: show backstory through damaged objects, visible consequences, or physical traces instead of speeches.
Anchor fast decisions
Readers tolerate information when it arrives as a byproduct of something the characters want, and resist it when it exists only for them. Dialogue driven by a character's own goal carries the same facts with a motive attached, so attention stays on the stakes rather than the delivery. Conflict also releases information selectively and under pressure, which reads as discovery instead of briefing.
