Mystery Box
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The driving force of a story is often not 'knowing' but 'not knowing'. Deliberately keep a core secret (the box) and do not rush to open it. What is inside the box is not important; what matters is the infinite possibility and attraction generated by the state of 'the box being unopened'.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Hook design. Do not explain all settings in the first chapter. Keep a huge, unresolved suspense as the engine to drag readers through the boring middle part.
Anchor fast decisions
A narrative technique advocated by J.J. Abrams: throw out a 'mystery box' full of enigmas but do not rush to open it, using suspense to maintain the audience's curiosity and engagement; the answer can be delayed or even never revealed.
