Emotional Intelligence, EQ
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-28
CORE DEFINITION
Emotional Quotient (EQ) or Emotional Intelligence (EI), often referred to as emotional intelligence, is an index of one's ability to control emotions, established by American psychologist Peter Salovey in 1991, belonging to the field of developmental psychology. Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, and control emotions. However, some question whether emotional intelligence is an extension of intellectual ability. Unlike IQ, emotional quotient can be improved through guidance. Daniel Goleman and other researchers developed the concept of emotional intelligence and claimed that it is at least as important as traditional IQ. Proponents of the theory of multiple intelligences typically believe that measuring the g factor is the best way to measure academic ability. They argue that other types of intelligence are equally important outside of schooling; in response, researchers of the g factor argue that when actual measurements are taken (Hunt 2001), the theory of multiple intelligences has not yet been born.
