Meta-Attention
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The ability to be aware of where one's attention currently is. That is, 'I know I am distracted right now' or 'I know I am focused right now.' Scaffolding role: the guardian of focus. Attention is a scarce resource, and meta-attention is the manager of that resource. Training meta-attention (e.g., checking what you are doing every hour) can prevent attention from being unconsciously harvested by algorithms.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
The guardian of focus. Attention is a scarce resource, and meta-attention is the manager of that resource. Training meta-attention (e.g., checking what you are doing every hour) can prevent attention from being unconsciously harvested by algorithms.
Anchor fast decisions
Meta-attention is metacognitive monitoring of one's current attentional state—being able to notice in real time 'I am distracted' or 'I am focused.' It acts as the manager of attention: without this monitoring, attention can be unconsciously harvested by external stimuli (algorithms, notifications) without one realizing it.
