CORE DEFINITION

Jaw tightly closed, unable to open the mouth. Commonly seen in stroke, tetanus, or convulsive diseases. Wind-phlegm obstructs the Jiache acupoint (masseter muscle).

From a TCM perspective, lockjaw is caused by wind-phlegm or heat obstructing the Jiache acupoint, leading to loss of jaw opening and closing function ("rusted hinge"). Modern counterpart is trismus due to tetanus or neurological disorders. The essence is "the switch mechanism is stuck."
