Roles are behavioral expectations that society holds for individuals in a certain position; individuals complete social interactions by enacting and internalizing roles. When role expectations conflict or are ambiguous, role strain and role confusion arise. Role behavior is shaped by both the 'role script' and the 'audience' (dramaturgical theory).
