Negging ("to neg", meaning "negative feedback") is an act of emotional manipulation whereby a person makes a deliberate backhanded compliment or otherwise flirtatious remark to another person to undermine their confidence and attempt to engender in them a need for the manipulator's approval. The term was coined and prescribed by pickup artists.

A manipulation technique in PUA/pickup: using sugar-coated belittlement (e.g., "You're smart, for a liberal arts student") to create cognitive dissonance—being both praised and demeaned, the victim's self-esteem is slightly weakened, leading them to crave the manipulator's approval to restore balance. The manipulator thereby establishes an unequal power dynamic and dependency. It leverages a mix of intermittent reinforcement and belittlement.
