CORE DEFINITION
Treating a system as a rational agent, assuming it has beliefs and desires, and predicting behavior accordingly. For example, a chess program 'wants' to capture my knight. Scaffolding role: anthropomorphic analysis. Not only for people, but also for AI, markets, viruses, adopting the intentional stance (what does it want? what is it afraid of?) is often the most efficient shortcut to predicting complex behavior, even if it may not truly possess consciousness.
