CORE DEFINITION

Proposed by Bryan Caplan. It means that you should not only be able to state your own views, but also be able to perfectly restate the opposing views, to the point that the opponent cannot tell whether it was written by themselves (passing the Turing test).

Depth of understanding. If you cannot convincingly express a view you do not hold, you have not truly understood it. This is a prerequisite for breaking out of echo chambers and establishing genuine dialogue.

You can convincingly state the opponent's view and have its supporters recognize it, only then have you truly understood it. The mechanism is to use 'reversible expression' to test understanding, not to mock.
