E-Prime
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A variant of English that eliminates the verb "to be" (is/are). You cannot say "John is an idiot"; you can only say "John's behavior seems stupid to me right now."
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Eliminate essentialist bias. When evaluating others or yourself, try removing "is." Instead of saying "I am an introvert" (permanent characterization), say "I feel shy at this party" (temporary state). This opens up possibilities for change.
Anchor fast decisions
E-Prime disallows the copula "to be" (am/is/are, etc.), forcing expressions to shift from "essential assertions" to "observer statements." Its mechanism is "de-essentialization" — "X is Y" implies eternal, objective characterization, which can solidify biases; using "it seems to me" or "appears at this moment" exposes the subjectivity and temporality of judgment, opening up possibilities for change.
