Bargaining Problem
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
How to distribute surplus value between two participants. The outcome depends on both parties' 'disagreement point' (BATNA), which is the fallback payoff each can secure if negotiations break down.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Enhance bargaining power. The core of negotiation is not eloquence, but your BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement). If you can walk away at any time and still do well, you hold the highest negotiation power.
Anchor fast decisions
The distribution depends on both parties' 'disagreement point' (their respective fallback BATNA after breakdown); the surplus to be distributed is negotiated within the interval above the BATNAs, and the party with the stronger BATNA gets a larger share. This is the core of cooperative game theory.
