Imagined Communities
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A nation or ethnicity is essentially a social construct. Even though we never know most of our compatriots, through shared language, media, and symbols, we imagine a parallel communion in our minds.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Organizational culture: Large companies are also imagined communities. The reason why Alibaba people and Tencent people have a sense of identity is because they share a set of symbol systems (jargon, values, rituals).
Anchor fast decisions
Benedict Anderson: A nation is an 'imagined community' whose members do not know each other yet conceive of themselves as belonging together. The mechanism is that print capitalism and language make large-scale identification possible.
