Protopia
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Proposed by Kevin Kelly. Unlike utopia (a perfect world) and dystopia (a collapsed world), protopia is a state where today is slightly better than yesterday, and tomorrow will be slightly better than today. It includes problems, but the capacity to solve them is also growing.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Establish a healthy view of the future. It dissolves extreme anxiety or fantasy about the future, emphasizes that 'small, continuous progress' is the true form of civilizational evolution, and encourages long-term optimism.
Anchor fast decisions
Kevin Kelly proposed: the future is neither utopia nor dystopia, but a 'gradual utopia' of small daily improvements.
