Superforecasting
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Ordinary experts' predictions are often no better than a dart-throwing monkey. But there is a class of "superforecasters" who, through Bayesian updating (adjusting probabilities as new information arrives), fine-grained granularity (saying 65% instead of "likely"), and teamwork, consistently outperform algorithms.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Demystifying prophecy: Don't be fooled by confident experts on TV (usually hedgehogs). True prediction is a cautious, probabilistic, and self-correcting process.
Anchor fast decisions
Superforecasting refers to the practice of aggregating the probabilistic judgments of a group of trained ordinary people to consistently outperform experts and intelligence agencies in predicting vague events such as geopolitical ones. Tetlock's research shows that 'fox-like' thinking and continuous updating are key.
