Autocatalysis
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The product of a reaction is itself a catalyst for the reaction. This leads to exponential growth in reaction rate (e.g., gunpowder explosion, virus spread, origin of life).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Find the growth engine. The most perfect business model is autocatalytic (e.g., Uber: more drivers attract more riders, more riders attract more drivers). Find the self-reinforcing loop, not one driven by external fuel (advertising spend).
Anchor fast decisions
The reaction product itself acts as a catalyst, causing the reaction rate to self-accelerate over time, often exponentially. Once a critical threshold is crossed, the reaction can become self-sustaining or even explosive without external input; negative processes (e.g., panic, bank runs, crashes) can also be autocatalytic, escalating increasingly.
