Firehose of Falsehood
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A propaganda model characterized by the rapid, continuous, and high-frequency dissemination of a large volume of information across multiple channels. This information is not required to be logically coherent or even truthful; its purpose is to overwhelm the audience's cognitive bandwidth with sheer volume, causing them to abandon the effort to discern truth from falsehood.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Responding to information overload attacks. In the face of such attacks, debunking each piece of misinformation is ineffective (because the cost of creating rumors is zero, while the cost of debunking is extremely high). The only defense is to cut off the source or establish a strong pre-set "cognitive firewall."
Anchor fast decisions
Refers to the strategy of overwhelming the audience with massive, high-speed, and repetitive false information, making it impossible for fact-checking to keep up, thereby disrupting cognition and eroding trust.
