Lean Canvas
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Adapted by Ash Maurya from the Business Model Canvas (BMC), more suitable for early-stage startups. It replaces 'Key Partners', 'Key Resources' etc. in BMC with 'Problem', 'Solution', 'Key Metrics', 'Unfair Advantage'.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Pain-point focus: Compared to BMC which focuses on 'how to do business', Lean Canvas focuses more on 'whether the problem exists'. It forces entrepreneurs to first figure out what the 'Unfair Advantage' (moat) is.
Anchor fast decisions
Adapted by Ash Maurya from the Business Model Canvas, using 9 blocks (Problem, Solution, Key Metrics, Unique Value Proposition, etc.) to quickly outline and test startup hypotheses.
