CORE DEFINITION

Proposed by Biggs. The three components of teaching must be aligned: 1. Intended learning outcomes (what you want them to learn); 2. Teaching activities (what you have them do to learn); 3. Assessment methods (how you test them).

Goal alignment. If you want to train someone's practical ability (goal), but only have them listen to lectures (activity) and test them on memorization (assessment), that is a disastrous misalignment.

Constructive alignment refers to the mutual alignment of learning objectives, teaching activities, and assessment: the 'performance' required of students is exactly what the objectives train and test. It enhances teaching effectiveness.
