CORE DEFINITION

Proposed by Jim Collins based on the experience of Admiral Stockdale, a prisoner of war in Vietnam. To survive, you must hold the belief that 'I will prevail in the end, even in the most brutal reality,' while also confronting the 'brutal facts of your current reality' without blind optimism.

Survival mindset. If you are only blindly optimistic ('We'll be home by Christmas'), you will die of disappointment. If you only see reality, you will despair. You must hold belief in one hand and reality in the other, and let them contend.

Stockdale proposed that you must confront the brutal facts of your current reality while simultaneously maintaining the faith that you will prevail in the end. It distinguishes between blind optimism and passive resignation.
