INTRODUCTION

CORE DEFINITION

A pair of mathematical growth patterns used as an interpretive frame. Exponential growth accumulates slowly at first and then accelerates, as in compound interest, viral transmission or compounding skill, so early results understate the eventual outcome and patience is required. Logarithmic growth moves fast at first and then flattens toward a ceiling, as in most skill curves, where early gains come cheaply and later gains cost progressively more. The model has no single proposer; it formalises the compounding logic behind compound-interest reasoning and the diminishing returns familiar from economics. Its use is diagnostic: identify which curve you are on before setting expectations or committing resources.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Classifying the curve: Decide whether the thing in front of you compounds or saturates before setting expectations. - Setting patience: On exponential curves, hold through the flat early phase instead of quitting. - Timing the second curve: When returns flatten, start a new compounding track rather than pushing harder.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Human intuition extrapolates linearly, but linear and exponential processes diverge slowly and then violently, so early samples look identical and predictions drawn from them fail at the point of largest consequence. Exponential processes reward survival of the flat phase because the growth rate applies to an accumulating base; logarithmic processes reward stopping because each additional unit of effort buys less. Distinguishing the two changes the optimal action from persistence to reallocation, which is why the classification matters more than the arithmetic.
