Time Machine Thinking

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
A concept attributed to the SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son, who described investing by looking at what has already succeeded in more developed markets and applying it to markets that have not yet caught up. Two readings coexist. The business one moves proven business models, technologies or institutions across regions separated by a development gap. The personal one tests a decision by imagining yourself ten years later looking back, or ten years earlier looking forward. Both rest on the same premise: situations separated in time share enough structure for an earlier outcome to inform a later one.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Spotting arbitrage: Ask which market has already solved today's problem and how far behind the target is. - Stress-testing a decision: Imagine your future self reviewing the choice and name what would make it a regret. - Timing entry: Use the development gap to estimate how long the opportunity window stays open.
Anchor fast decisions
Markets and institutions evolve along broadly similar paths but not in step. A model or rule that has already survived selection in a leading market carries information about demand, unit economics and failure modes that a lagging market has not yet paid to discover, so importing it transfers that information cheaply and the gap provides a head start before local competitors converge. The personal variant works the same way: a distant viewpoint breaks the grip of present emotion so that consequences, not immediate preferences, get weighed.
