Value Index Mental Model

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
A decision heuristic built on the idea of a value index, originally a ratio of function to cost used to compare products and extended here to any factor whose contribution to an outcome scales non-linearly. The model holds that inputs differ enormously in leverage: most activities produce proportional results, while a small number compound, so equal effort spread evenly yields far less than the same effort concentrated on the compounding ones. Applied to firms it points to innovation that escapes price competition and earns a premium; applied to individuals it points to capabilities such as judgement, writing and product skills that raise the ceiling on everything else. The claim is about allocation, not about working harder.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Ranking inputs: Estimate whether each activity compounds or merely adds before allocating time to it. - Escaping competition: Choose work whose value comes from novelty or scarcity rather than from extra effort. - Committing long-term: Accept a delayed payoff where the compounding mechanism is checkable and the horizon is fixed.
Anchor fast decisions
Outcomes compound when each unit of output raises the value of the next: a skill that makes later work faster, or an audience that grows with every piece published. Returns then grow faster than effort, so shifting effort from linear tasks to compounding ones changes the total far more than raising total effort does. The same logic explains why averaging effort across many activities is inefficient, since the compounding term starts small and only wins when given disproportionate resources and time.
