The Third Door
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Proposed by Alex Banayan. Life is like a nightclub: the first door (the main entrance) has a long line, the second door (the VIP entrance) is only for the privileged. But there is always a third door: at this point you need to step out of the line, knock on the kitchen window, or climb through the dumpster.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Non-linear path. When the conventional path doesn't work, don't insist. Look for side doors, back doors, ventilation ducts. Rules are usually made for the first door; breaking the rules often finds the third door.
Anchor fast decisions
A metaphor that success is not only achieved by queuing (first door) or buying a ticket (second door), but there exists a 'third door' that requires actively creating opportunities—opening opportunities through unconventional means.
