Zimmerman's SRL Model

CORE DEFINITION
Zimmerman's self-regulated learning model is a three-phase cycle: the forethought phase, with goal setting and strategy planning, the performance phase, with self-monitoring and strategy use, and the self-reflection phase, with evaluation and attribution. Its scaffold is a framework for learning how to learn: what effective learners share is the capacity to self-regulate, and this model decomposes that capacity into trainable sub-skills.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Set before starting: write the goal and the strategy before the study session begins. - Monitor while working: track attention and method during the work, not only after it. - Reflect and attribute: evaluate the outcome against the strategy and assign the cause honestly.
Anchor fast decisions
Learning improves only where the learner can observe and adjust their own process, which requires a closed loop rather than mere effort. Each phase feeds the next: a goal set in forethought gives monitoring something to track, monitoring supplies the data for reflection, and reflection revises the strategy for the next goal. The loop is what converts time spent into skill gained.
