Huang-Lao is a form of early Daoist thought and an important branch within Daoism that advocates active engagement in worldly affairs. It applies the traditional reclusive Daoist philosophy to state governance to achieve national wealth and military strength. It is named for its attribution to the Yellow Emperor and its reverence for Laozi. Huang-Lao Daoism later also became the beginning of Daoism (as a religion). Disciples of Laozi, speaking in the name of the Yellow Emperor, and venerating Yi Yin and Jiang Taigong, advocated clarity, tranquility, and non-action (wu wei), not disturbing the people, allowing them to 'self-transform,' thereby bringing peace and order to the world.
