CORE DEFINITION

The Hongmen Banquet refers to the meeting in December 206 BC (the first year of the Han) at Xinfeng Hongmen, outside the former Qin capital Xianyang (now Hongmen Village, Xinfeng Subdistrict, Lintong District, Xi'an, Shaanxi Province), where two Chu generals, Xiang Yu and Liu Bang, dined, with Xiang Yu hosting Liu Bang. Previously, King Huai of Chu, Xiong Xin, had agreed with the generals that whoever first entered the Guanzhong region would be made king. Liu Bang, having entered Guanzhong first and destroyed Qin, intended to make the Qin prince Ziying his chancellor and declare himself king in Guanzhong, which angered the powerful Xiang Yu. Liu Bang, realizing his own strength was inferior, ceded control of Guanzhong to Xiang Yu, who was ultimately satisfied and abandoned his plan to attack Liu Bang, creating peaceful conditions for the enfeoffment of nobles a few months later. This banquet had significant influence on the Chu-Han Contention and subsequent Chinese history. Although Xiang Yu gained the most benefit, he later enfeoffed Liu Bang with the Hanzhong Commandery. Later, the Three Qins (Yong King Zhang Han, Di King Dong Yi, and Sai King Sima Xin) failed to resist Liu Bang, allowing him to annex Guanzhong, which laid the groundwork for the future Chu-Han struggle.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

The Hongmen Banquet, superficially a feast but actually a trap, stems from power disparity and lack of trust: the host uses 'socializing' to lower the guest's guard for espionage or elimination. The mechanism is 'high-risk socializing'—the friendly facade of the occasion masks the underlying conflict of interests.
