CORE DEFINITION

Higher-order thinking names the layers above remembering and understanding in Bloom's taxonomy: analysis, evaluation, and creation, the work that transforms what is known rather than reproducing it. It includes transfer, the ability to apply knowledge in a new situation. As a model it is the commitment to deep learning over shallow recall, and it sets the higher goal of education: judging and generating on the basis of what has been learned.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Target lifting: move the objective from recalling to applying, analyzing, or creating - Open problems: use real questions with no fixed answer to force processing - Transfer drills: set the same idea in a new situation and check if it still holds

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Higher tiers consolidate knowledge because transformation is what makes it usable. Analysis breaks a whole into relations, evaluation tests value against criteria, and creation assembles something new; each step rewrites the memory into a structure that can travel. Recall alone leaves knowledge inert, which is why students can repeat a definition and fail the situation it describes.
