Axial Coding

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
The second analytic stage of grounded theory, developed by Strauss and Corbin, in which the concepts produced by open coding are organized around a central category and its properties and dimensions, linking conditions, actions, and consequences into a paradigm model. The core proposition is that fragments become theory only when their relationships are specified, not merely sorted.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Core selection: choose the single category that can carry the most other concepts. - Dimension build: name the properties and dimensions along which the core category varies. - Link assembly: connect causes, context, and consequences into one coherent paradigm model.
Anchor fast decisions
Open coding produces many small concepts that describe but do not explain, and explanation requires relations. Organizing the fragments around an axis names what the variation depends on and what it produces, converting a list into a model that can predict a case it has not seen.
