Empty, Unified, and Still

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
From the Removing Obstructions chapter of the Xunzi, the highest state of knowing has three parts: empty, so existing knowledge does not obstruct new knowledge; unified, so scattered information does not disturb the central aim; still, so emotional turbulence does not disturb rational thought. Its claim is that when learning stalls, the cause is one of these three, prejudice, dispersion or anxiety.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Three-part diagnostic: when you cannot learn, check prejudice, dispersion and anxiety in order. - Vacancy first: suspend the conclusion already in place before reading the evidence. - Single object: hold one question and let the rest wait.
Anchor fast decisions
Prejudice filters what arrives, dispersion splits attention, and anxiety occupies the working space that thought needs. Removing the three restores the capacity that was always there, so the block dissolves rather than gets pushed through.
