Time to Live

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Borrowed from networking, where time to live is the hop or time limit after which a packet is dropped so that it cannot circulate forever. In knowledge and time management the same idea is applied two ways: information is assigned an expiry after which it is treated as obsolete, and time is classified as survival time, consumed merely to keep operating, versus active time invested in growth. The qualification is that the appropriate expiry varies enormously, from hours for news to decades for classics.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Expiry assignment: give each incoming item a lifetime before deciding how much attention it deserves. - Attention shift: concentrate on long-lived material such as classics rather than on items expiring within a day. - Survival audit: separate time spent merely keeping things running from time that compounds.
Anchor fast decisions
Attentional capacity is fixed, so the value of attention depends on how long the object of attention stays useful. Material with a short lifetime consumes the same capacity as material with a long one while returning value for only a brief period. Assigning explicit expiries makes that difference visible, which redirects attention toward material that keeps paying and reduces the cost of maintaining obsolete information.
