Price's Law

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Proposed by Derek de Solla Price, the law states that in any field roughly half of the total output is produced by a number of highly productive contributors equal to the square root of the field's total population. The core idea is that contribution follows a steep power-law distribution rather than a normal one, revealing the long-tail and head asymmetry inside collaborative work and directing attention toward identifying and protecting the few core contributors.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Reveals skewed output: contribution genuinely follows a power law, not a bell curve - Locates the vital few: the square-root minority produces about half of all results - Guides allocation: hiring, retention, and support are weighted toward the true core
Anchor fast decisions
Output in knowledge work compounds rather than simply adding: skill, reputation, and tools multiply each other, so the strongest contributors pull away exponentially. A square-root share of the population therefore controls about half the total output, and the distribution of contribution stays highly skewed as the whole population grows.
