INTRODUCTION

English translation pending.

CORE DEFINITION

The term comes from the Nourishment hexagram of the Yi Jing, where seeking nourishment from an unusual source is described as going against the norm yet still workable. As a decision idea it holds that when the standard path has failed or does not fit the case, deviation is permitted, provided the actor understands why the norm existed and sets conditions for returning. It underlies disruptive innovation and principled rule-breaking. The qualification is strict: deviation is licensed by circumstance rather than preference, and it must remain temporary and reversible, or it becomes simple misconduct.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Justify the break: state which standard path has failed and why the case is genuinely exceptional. - Bound the deviation: set scope, duration, and a return condition before acting. - Review and revert: examine the outcome afterward and fold any learning back into the norm.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Norms encode accumulated experience, so they are usually the right default and should be broken only when their preconditions are absent. Diagnosing the exception therefore requires naming what the norm assumed and showing that the assumption fails. Bounding the deviation protects against the main failure mode, which is drift: an exception that is never closed becomes the new rule and imports its risks without the reasoning that justified it. Review converts a one-off departure into organizational learning, the only way rule-breaking repays its cost.
