Bird in Hand
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Proposed by Saras Sarasvathy. Entrepreneurs should not pursue perfect grand goals, but first look at what resources they have in hand (Who am I? What do I know? Whom do I know?) and start acting immediately.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Reject daydreaming. Do not stagnate due to lack of resources. Take stock of your current 'means' and see what you can do based on them, rather than setting goals first and then complaining about insufficient resources.
Anchor fast decisions
One of the core principles of effectuation proposed by Sarasvathy: entrepreneurs do not work backward from preset goals to resources, but start from existing means (who I am / what I know / whom I know), first see what can be done with the bird in hand, and let goals emerge in action. It reverses causal logic (from means to possibilities, rather than from goals to required resources).
