Erya Approach

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
The Erya is the earliest surviving Chinese dictionary, organised by semantic category such as the explanation of ancient words, of common words, and of objects, and using glosses to connect archaic terms with current usage. As a method it stands for clarifying concepts by defining terms precisely before discussion begins. The qualification is that it glosses word meanings rather than supplying encyclopedic knowledge, so it cannot be read as a general reference on the world.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Use Term Alignment: agree the definition of each key term before a discussion proceeds. - Use Semantic Grouping: collect the words that share a meaning to see the boundaries of a concept.
Anchor fast decisions
Disagreement frequently rests on participants using the same word for different things. Fixing definitions first removes that source of confusion, and grouping synonyms together shows where a concept's boundary lies, which lets an argument proceed on shared ground.
