Field Independence

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Field independence and field dependence form the two poles of a cognitive style continuum. Field-independent people excel at separating target information from its background and rely on internal cues; field-dependent people are more influenced by the overall situation and external contextual cues. The difference stems from a preference for analytic versus holistic information processing. Neither pole is universally superior across situations.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Know your bias: identify your own position on the analytic-holistic continuum, so you can play to strengths and train weak spots. - Staff complementarily: pair field-independent and field-dependent members so analytical sharpness and interpersonal coordination both get covered. - Read the context: judge whether the current task rewards separating from context or sensitivity to it.
Anchor fast decisions
The two styles differ in whether processing leads with analysis or with the whole. Field-independent perceivers detach figure from ground using internal reference frames; field-dependent perceivers organize around the surrounding field, so contextual change shifts their judgment more.
