Zone of Possible Agreement
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The overlapping area between the buyer's highest offer and the seller's lowest asking price. Only when a ZOPA exists can a negotiation reach an agreement. Scaffold role: negotiation map. Negotiation is not about defeating the other party, but about finding the ZOPA. If you don't know the other party's bottom line (BATNA), you cannot see the ZOPA and can only flail in the dark.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Negotiation map. Negotiation is not about defeating the other party, but about finding the ZOPA. If you don't know the other party's bottom line (BATNA), you cannot see the ZOPA and can only flail in the dark.
Anchor fast decisions
The negotiation solution set exists in the overlap between the buyer's reservation price (maximum) and the seller's reservation price (minimum). If there is no overlap (buyer's maximum < seller's minimum), then the ZOPA does not exist, and there is no room for agreement. BATNA determines the reservation price and bargaining power.
